坎培拉是澳洲首都，同時也是首都領地的首府。坎培拉是澳洲最大的內陸城市，座落於澳洲首都領地北端，距離澳洲東岸兩大都會城市雪梨和墨爾本分別為280公里和660公里。澳大利亞聯邦1908年決定在雪梨和墨爾本兩大城市之間的折衷地理位置定都，即今天的坎培拉。
Canberra is the capital city of Australia and the only substantial settlement of the Australian Capital Territory. Founded following the federation of the colonies of Australia as the seat of government for the new nation, a compromise between Melbourne and Sydney, it is Australia's largest inland city, and the eighth-largest Australian city by population. The city is located at the northern tip of the Australian Alps, the country's highest mountain range.
