The Temple of Diana in Mérida is a stunning example of Roman architecture, it’s a UNESCO. Interestingly, it was not dedicated to the goddess Diana but rather to the worship of the emperor and his family, in line with the imperial cult of ancient Rome.
In the 15th century, a nobleman decided to construct his palace directly atop the temple, significantly altering its original structure. Later, in the 20th century, a U-shaped concrete building was inexplicably constructed around the temple—a decision that remains puzzling to this day.
Despite these modifications, the temple remains a fascinating site. It showcases layers of history, where you can see how the Muslims built upon structures left by the Visigoths, who, in turn, had built on the original Roman foundations. The interplay of these civilizations makes the temple an extraordinary testament to the rich and complex heritage of Mérida.
